Be Still and Know

Be Still and Know

be still and know that I am GodHeartache and pain.  Chaos and confusion.  Hurt and disappointment.  Extreme highs and lows.  For so many of us, these last number of years have been excruciating.  We have endured painful loss, in our families, our finances and our well-being.  Others have been going through holding patterns where nothing at all seems to be moving – let alone moving in the right direction! But through it all, Scripture tells us: “Be still and know that I am God! I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10)

Hearing be still and know that I am God means, “trust me.”  He sees our pain, our tears, our frustration, our fear, our circumstances that haven’t changed in Heaven only knows how long!  We are the ones changing in the process. We are becoming more like Christ with each difficulty we face. Like so many of you, I too have faced endless battles, as I briefly spoke of on my about me page.

God Is Not The Author Of Confusion

1 Corinthians 14:33 reminds us that God is the author of peace, not confusion.  In our lives when we face chaos, it affects how we think, what we think and how we respond.  As humans, chaos tends to make us react in haste, deciding to do something, anything at all, often without praying or sitting with the Lord to determine whether or not you have peace about the situation.

When confusion strikes, God is sending us a message loud and clear.  I truly believe that this Scripture concerning confusion and the Scripture about being still and knowing God is God, are related.  When we are confused and don’t know what to do – instead of acting just to act, be still and know that He IS God.  Holy Spirit will lead you and guide you into all truth.  (John 16:13)

I Didn’t Say It’s Always Easy…

I didn’t say the process would be painless or easy because it won’t be. Have you ever heard the term “growing pains” about kids that are becoming young adults?  I submit to you that the same is true of our character in Christ.  Faith to believe the best gets stretched and our hearts begin to ache.  Our motives and thoughts get called into question and we begin to examine just what we are made of.

Yes, we are growing.  Yet in the midst of all this growing, we are instructed through Scripture to lay our burdens down at the feet of Jesus.  He is the bearer of our burdens if we let Him. He knows exactly what to do, if only we will wait on Him.

Psalm 55:22 says, “Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”  Again in Matthew 11:28:30 below, Father God reminds us that we are not to be weighed down with burdens, cares and concerns.

28Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

In Times Of Transition bridge of transition

Transition: I know that I’m not where I need/want to be and I’m also not comfortable where I am any longer.  You begin to ask yourself, do I belong anywhere? Do I have anything to offer of value or a purpose in this world? I feel like an alien who doesn’t fit anywhere.

If that describes how you feel, take heart.  Most likely you are in transition and that’s okay!  The Scripture from Psalm 46:10 about being still and knowing He is God, is for you.  Sometimes when you don’t know what to do – the very best thing you can do is absolutely nothing.  When you don’t feel peace after praying about the opportunity in front of you (whatever that may be), there is a reason.  Forcing peace because you desire a certain answer is ill-advised.  The pain you will create for yourself later down the line is exactly what the Lord wants you to avoid.

As people, we tend to suffer from the pressures of this world.  This is an “instant society” where everything needs to be done right now.  God doesn’t work on our same time schedule.  Wait is a word in His vocabulary that gets used quite a bit.  🙂  Sorry, I know that I’m the bearer of bad news right now, but we all know it’s true.

People will expect you to have an answer right this moment.  Don’t give in to that pressure, because you need to hear and obey God, not man. Man cannot bring you success or lasting fulfillment.  The only way to have that in this life is to follow the path the Lord has laid before you.  Your path will not look like someone else’s and you don’t have to do it the way they did.  Understanding this is very important to your walk with God.

It’s okay that you’re scared as long as you give God your fear and allow Him to comfort you.  I know first hand what it’s like to lie awake, wondering how something is going to turn out.  As you’re lying there saying, “Lord, I need healing, I need deliverance, my marriage is falling apart, my finances have dried up completely — what do I do now?!?”  Be still and know that I am God!

As I write this, I’m ministering to myself, too.  I understand fully the onslaught of attacks we’ve faced from the enemy, especially as of late.  It has been one problem after another problem with not a solution in sight.  When there really is nothing you can do, what can you do?  Our impossible situations are simply a way for Almighty God to show up and show off.  The name of Jesus is the greatest power there is.  Every knee must bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ IS Lord.  (Romans 14:11)

The victory is already yours through Christ Jesus.  (1 Cor 15:57) It’s not always easy to remember this when you’re in the thick of the storm and you can’t see your way whatsoever.  He is our Good Shepherd and He is bringing you out of this storm.  (John 10:14)

Not only will you make it out of this alive – you will thrive.  After all the smoke has cleared and the battle is done, you will see He never left you, nor forsook you.  Your character will be forever transformed to look more like Christ and the healing you will help bring others because of what you’ve been through will never be forgotten.

Your breakthrough is on the way. Be blessed my friends!

  1. Living with a progressive disability, I deal with worrying sometimes–about when I’ll lose certain abilities, if I will die young, etc. I have to “Be Still and Know That He Is God” to stop the thoughts running through my mind!

    1. Lily, I am sending you a BIG hug! I understand completely what you are saying. Thankfully, our God is so very patient in helping us give those burdens to Him, even when we continuously second-guess ourselves and pick the burden back up.

There was a time in my life where I was dying. It could have happened at any moment. Before it had progressed that far, I felt the same way as you. You are speaking with someone who understands at least part of your struggle, even if the circumstances are unique.

I trust (and am praying for you) that Holy Spirit will wipe away any tears, calm your fears and wrap His arms of love around you to drive away any attempt of the enemy to bring discouragement or despair into your heart. He’s a liar, the father of lies in fact and there is no truth in him. You are created perfectly, with no flaw, and you were born to be the beautiful shining star you are every day.

Nothing but love to you Lily. I pray your day, your week and the many years of your life will be ridiculously blessed!

      1. Dear Holly,
You have a beautiful gift of encouragement. May God continue to use you to bring his specific and timely word to wounded lambs and sheep, which uplifts, stirs hope and ministers healing.

      2. Dearest Carol,

Wow. I needed to hear this tonight, thank you! Your words have deeply touched me.

I sincerely believe nothing in this life changes us like love. God’s love extended through us. There is so much hurt and so much pain. Let hope arise!

God bless you, sweet Carol. It’s great to hear from you.

      3. Well I am so glad God was able to use me to speak a timely word to your heart. You will never know how much I appreciated your words of encouragement last week.
As you say, so much hurt and pain in people’s lives.
Have a blessed and peaceful week Holly.
